Understanding Your Medicare Options
Navigating Medicare doesn't have to be overwhelming. Whether you're turning 65 or looking to change your current coverage, we're here to help you understand Original Medicare, Advantage plans, Supplements, and everything in between.
The Basics of Original Medicare
Original Medicare is provided by the federal government and is split into two main parts. While it covers a lot, it doesn't cover everything, which is why additional plans are often necessary.
Part A: Hospital Insurance
Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Inpatient hospital stays
- Skilled nursing facilities
- Hospice care
Part B: Medical Insurance
Helps cover services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, and durable medical equipment.
- Doctor visits & consultations
- Outpatient surgeries & procedures
- Preventive services & screenings
Choosing Your Coverage Path
Because Original Medicare only covers about 80% of your medical costs, most people choose one of two paths to cover the rest: a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
You pay a higher monthly premium, but your out-of-pocket costs for medical services are very low and highly predictable.
- Ultimate Freedom of ChoiceSee any doctor or specialist in the US that accepts Original Medicare. No networks.
- Predictable CostsOnce your deductible is met, almost all covered medical services are paid at 100%.
- No Referrals NeededYou never need a referral to see a specialist.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
These plans often have low monthly premiums, but you pay copays or coinsurance as you use services.
- Bundled CoverageCombines Part A, Part B, and usually Part D (prescription drugs) into one easy plan.
- Extra BenefitsOften includes extras Original Medicare doesn't, like dental, vision, hearing, and gym memberships.
- Network BasedYou generally must use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network (HMO or PPO).
Important Ancillary options
Original Medicare and Supplements don't cover everything. To ensure you have complete, holistic protection, there are plenty of affordable ancillary options available to fill the gaps.
Dental, Vision & Hearing
Original Medicare explicitly excludes routine dental care, eye exams for glasses, and hearing aids. Standalone DVH plans keep your teeth, eyes, and ears healthy.
Hospital Indemnity
If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have copays for hospital stays. An indemnity plan pays you a cash benefit to help cover those copays.
Cancer & Heart Attack
These plans provide a lump-sum cash benefit upon diagnosis, helping you pay for experimental treatments, travel for care, or everyday bills while you recover.
